Who veneers are actually for

Veneers are thin shells of ceramic or composite bonded to the front of a tooth to change its colour, shape or length. Done on the right teeth, they are one of the most predictable ways to fix a smile that looks worn, stained or uneven. Done on the wrong teeth, they fail early and cost the tooth enamel it can’t get back.

At V R Dental, veneers are planned by Dr. Vyshnavi, an MDS Prosthodontist and Implantologist, at both our Kukatpally and Bowrampet clinics. Her first job isn’t to fit veneers. It is to decide whether you need them at all.

Veneers work best when the tooth underneath is healthy and the problem is on the surface. The cases that respond well:

  • Discolouration that whitening won’t shift — tetracycline staining, fluorosis, a tooth that darkened after a root canal
  • Chipped or worn edges — front teeth that have lost their length and look flat or short
  • Small or short teeth — where the proportions of the smile look off even though nothing is broken
  • Mild unevenness or small gaps — one tooth slightly rotated, a narrow space between the front teeth, uneven edges

Who we advise against veneers

Some patients ask for veneers and are better served by something else. We’ll tell you if that’s you.

  • Crowded or significantly crooked teeth. Veneering over crowding means cutting healthy teeth to fake alignment. Aligners first; veneers later, if still needed.
  • Heavy grinders and clenchers. Ceramic chips under grinding forces. If you wake with a sore jaw or your dentist has spotted wear facets, we address that before any cosmetic work.
  • Active gum disease. Veneers bonded near inflamed gums end up with visible margins as the gum recedes. Gums are treated and stable first.
  • Teeth with large fillings or root canals. There isn’t enough enamel to bond a veneer to. A crown protects the tooth; a veneer would not.

If you’re in the second group, the assessment ends with a better plan, not a veneer.

Porcelain veneers vs composite veneers

Two materials, two very different treatments.

Porcelain (ceramic) veneersComposite veneers

Composite is a sensible choice for a single chipped edge, a younger patient, or a trial of what a shape change would look like. Porcelain is the right choice when you want the result to last and to look like enamel rather than filling material.

Veneers vs crowns vs bonding

Patients often arrive having been offered a crown elsewhere for a tooth that only needs a veneer, or a veneer for a tooth that really needs a crown. The difference is how much tooth is removed and how much is protected.

  • Bonding adds composite to a tooth with almost no preparation. Right for a small chip or a narrow gap between front teeth. If you’re closing a small gap, our teeth-gap page explains when bonding is enough.
  • A veneer covers the front face only. It removes a thin layer of enamel and is right when the tooth is structurally sound but looks wrong.
  • A crown covers the whole tooth. It removes far more structure, and is right when the tooth is weak — a large filling, a root canal, a crack. If that’s your situation, a zirconia crown is the protective option, not a veneer.

The rule Dr. Vyshnavi works by: remove the least tooth that gets a stable, lasting result. A crown on a tooth that only needed a veneer is over-treatment, and we don’t do it.

How Dr. Vyshnavi plans a veneer case

This is the part most veneer pages skip, and it’s the part that decides whether veneers look right on your face or just look white.

  1. Assessment and photographs. Your bite, gum health, tooth shade and the way your lip moves when you speak and smile. If grinding, gum disease or crowding shows up, the plan changes here.
  2. Wax-up and trial smile. A dental technician builds the proposed shapes on a model of your teeth. That wax-up is transferred to your mouth as a temporary trial smile you can see in a mirror and live with for a short while. Nothing is drilled at this stage. If you want the edges longer, the shape softer, the colour warmer, we adjust it now, not after the ceramic is made.
  3. Minimal preparation. Once the trial smile is approved, about 0.3–0.7 mm of enamel is reshaped — roughly the thickness of a fingernail — guided by the trial smile so no more is removed than the ceramic needs.
  4. Temporaries. You leave with temporary veneers shaped like the final ones. You’ll already know how the result feels when you speak and eat.
  5. Lab-made ceramic. Your veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory to the approved trial shape and shade, layered to mimic natural enamel translucency.
  6. Try-in and bonding. Each veneer is checked for fit, colour and edge before it’s bonded. Once bonded, the bite is refined so no veneer takes more load than it should.

Timeline: three to four visits over two to three weeks for porcelain veneers. Composite veneers are completed in a single visit.

How long veneers last, and what shortens their life

Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years. Some go longer. Nothing lasts a lifetime, and any clinic promising that is selling you something.

What shortens a veneer’s life:

  • Grinding or clenching — the single biggest cause of chipped veneers. If you grind, a night guard is not optional; it’s part of the treatment.
  • Using teeth as tools — opening packets, biting nails, chewing pens or ice.
  • Gum recession — exposes the veneer margin over time. Good home care and regular cleans keep the gum line where it is.
  • Skipping reviews — a small chip caught early can be polished; a large one means a replacement.

With ordinary care — brushing, flossing, a professional clean every six months, and a night guard if you need one — veneers are a low-maintenance restoration.

Veneer cost in Hyderabad

At V R Dental, porcelain veneers start from ₹18,000 per tooth and composite veneers start from ₹5,000 per tooth. Your exact fee is confirmed after the assessment and before any work begins, with no changes mid-treatment.

What moves the figure:

  • Material and lab. Layered ceramic from a specialist laboratory costs more than pressed ceramic or chairside composite, and it’s where the natural look comes from.
  • Number of teeth. Two chipped incisors is a different case from eight upper front teeth. Symmetry often means treating in pairs.
  • Preparatory work. Gum treatment, whitening of the neighbouring teeth, or a night guard are quoted separately if they’re needed.
  • Complexity. Closing gaps or changing tooth length needs more planning time and a more involved wax-up than a straight shade change.

EMI options are available through Bajaj Finance.

Frequently asked questions about veneers

Do veneers damage your teeth?

A porcelain veneer needs a thin layer of enamel removed — about 0.3–0.7 mm — so the veneer sits flush and doesn’t look bulky. That enamel doesn’t grow back, which is why we only recommend veneers on teeth that genuinely need them, and why the trial smile comes before any drilling. Composite veneers usually need little or no preparation.

Are veneers permanent?

Porcelain veneers are a long-term restoration, typically lasting 10–15 years, but they are not permanent. Because enamel is removed to place them, the tooth will always need a veneer or similar covering afterwards. Plan for replacement at some point, not for never.

Can veneers be removed?

Yes, but the tooth underneath will need a new veneer or another restoration. Veneers are not something you can take off and go back to the original tooth.

Do veneers stain?

Porcelain doesn’t absorb stain, so it stays the shade it was made. The natural teeth beside it can still darken, which is why we often suggest whitening the surrounding teeth before matching the veneer shade. Composite veneers do pick up stain over time and need periodic polishing.

Can I get one veneer, or do I need a full set?

A single veneer is perfectly reasonable for one chipped or discoloured tooth. Matching one veneer to natural neighbours is technically harder than doing a set, which is where the lab and the shade-matching matter. Most patients treat two to eight front teeth; there’s no rule that says more.

Can veneers fix crooked teeth?

Mildly rotated or uneven teeth, yes. Genuinely crowded or crooked teeth, no — veneers would need excessive tooth removal to fake alignment. Those cases go to aligners first, and veneers afterwards only if there’s still a shape or colour problem to solve.

Can veneers close a gap between my front teeth?

Small gaps, yes, and veneers give a more durable result than bonding when the gap is wider or there’s also a colour or shape change wanted. For a narrow gap on otherwise good teeth, bonding is often enough. See when bonding versus veneers is the right choice.

How many visits do veneers take?

Porcelain veneers take three to four visits over two to three weeks: assessment, trial smile, preparation with temporaries, and bonding. Composite veneers are done in one visit.

Find out whether veneers — or something simpler — is right for your teeth

Some patients who come in asking for veneers leave with a whitening plan or a single bonded edge, because that’s all they needed. Others learn that the crown they were quoted elsewhere was more than their tooth required. An assessment with Dr. Vyshnavi tells you which you are before any tooth is touched.
