Jaw Surgery (Orthognathic) Cost in Hyderabad — What Decides the Price

By Dr. Ram Mohan S, MDS Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon · Reviewed 17 October 2026

Jaw surgery is priced by what has to move. There is no flat rate. A single-jaw operation, a double-jaw (bimaxillary) operation and a chin or asymmetry correction each take different operating time, a different hospital stay and different fixation hardware. And most of the bill is not my fee. It is the hospital and the anaesthesia. Below is how I plan and price these cases at V R Dental, so that when you compare quotes from different clinics, you are comparing the same things.

Jaw surgery cost in Hyderabad by procedure (2026)

The surgical fee for each procedure is given on your written estimate at the consultation. Hospital charges, anaesthesia, titanium plates and screws, and CBCT imaging are listed separately on that estimate. Ask every clinic for the same breakdown. A single “package” figure usually hides what is in it and what is not.

  • Single-jaw surgery (upper jaw – Le Fort I, or lower jaw – BSSO): one jaw sits too far forward or back. Hospital stay 1–2 nights.
  • Double-jaw (bimaxillary) surgery: both jaws are repositioned. This is the operation for most combined bite-and-profile cases. Hospital stay 2–3 nights.
  • Genioplasty (chin surgery): moves the chin for a short, long or receding lower face. Usually done with jaw surgery, sometimes alone. Day-care or 1 night.
  • Jaw asymmetry correction: for a facial midline that drifts to one side. Hospital stay 2–3 nights.
  • Pre-surgical orthodontics (12–18 months of braces or aligners before surgery): metal braces starting from ₹45,000; ceramic from ₹55,000; aligners from ₹80,000.

What actually makes up a jaw surgery bill

Patients compare surgeon’s fees and miss where the money goes. A typical orthognathic case has five parts:

  • Surgical fee (planning, the operation, and follow-up for 12 months)
  • Hospital stay and operating theatre charges
  • General anaesthesia and the anaesthetist’s fee
  • Fixation hardware: titanium mini-plates and screws, which stay in for good
  • Imaging: CBCT before surgery, OPG and cephalogram during planning and afterwards

Hospital and anaesthesia together often cost more than the surgery itself. That is why the same surgeon can quote two very different totals at two hospitals. I give you my fee and the hospital’s own estimate as separate documents, so nothing is bundled out of sight.

Who needs jaw surgery, and who only needs braces

Braces move teeth. They cannot move the bone the teeth sit in. If the problem is the jaw itself — a lower jaw set too far back (retrognathia), a jaw that juts forward (prognathism), an open bite where the front teeth never meet, or a face that is visibly asymmetric — braces alone either fail to close the bite or close it by tipping teeth into positions they cannot hold.

I make this call on a cephalometric X-ray and a clinical examination, not on how your face looks in a photograph. At the consultation you get a plain answer: braces only, braces plus surgery, or surgery first. A good number of people who come in asking about jaw surgery need only orthodontics. I would rather say so than operate.

The four stages of orthognathic treatment

  1. Planning. Clinical examination, CBCT, cephalogram, photographs and dental models. The orthodontist and I decide the final jaw position together before anything starts.
  2. Pre-surgical orthodontics. Usually 12–18 months. The teeth in each jaw are aligned so that when the jaws are moved, the bite locks together. Your bite often looks worse during this stage. That is expected.
  3. Surgery. Under general anaesthesia in hospital. Every incision is inside the mouth, so there is no visible scar. The jaws are repositioned and fixed with titanium plates. Stay is 1–3 nights depending on the operation.
  4. Recovery and finishing orthodontics. Swelling settles over weeks. Braces stay on a few months more to fine-tune the bite, then retainers.

Recovery timeline

  • Days 1–3: swelling peaks. Numbness of the lip and chin is normal. Liquid diet, in hospital.
  • Weeks 1–2: home. Liquids and very soft food. Swelling begins to go down. Most people are off strong painkillers within a week; what they describe is pressure and numbness, not sharp pain.
  • Weeks 2–6: soft diet. Swelling mostly gone by week 4. Desk work usually from week 2–3.
  • Weeks 6–12: normal diet, gradually. The bone has consolidated.
  • 3–6 months: residual numbness improves for most patients. Final orthodontic adjustments.

Is jaw surgery covered by insurance in India?

Often, if it is functional. Insurers generally cover orthognathic surgery for a documented bite disorder, obstructive sleep apnoea, a congenital or developmental jaw deformity, or correction after trauma. Surgery for appearance alone is not covered. For functional cases we prepare the clinical documentation and the pre-authorisation paperwork. Whether the policy pays depends on its wording, so send us the policy early in planning.

Why a maxillofacial surgeon, not a cosmetic surgeon

Jaw surgery changes the bite. Move the jaws to a position that looks right in profile but leaves the teeth unable to meet, and the patient gets a lifetime of chewing problems and, often, a second operation. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty trained in both the facial skeleton and the occlusion. That is why the case is planned with an orthodontist and finished on the bite, not on the photograph.

Jaw pain is not always a surgical problem

Clicking, locking and aching jaws usually come from the joint and the muscles, not from jaw position. They are treated conservatively. If that is your symptom, read about TMJ treatment first. Surgery is rarely the answer for jaw pain.

Frequently asked questions

How much does double jaw surgery cost in Hyderabad?

At V R Dental the surgical fee for double-jaw (bimaxillary) surgery is given on a written estimate at your consultation. The hospital stay (2–3 nights), general anaesthesia, titanium plates and CBCT imaging are itemised separately on that estimate, and pre-surgical braces add 12–18 months of orthodontic fees. You get all five parts in writing before you commit.

Is jawline surgery the same as jaw surgery?

No. Jawline or V-line surgery reshapes the outer edge of the lower jaw for appearance. It does not touch the bite. Orthognathic jaw surgery repositions the jaws so the teeth meet correctly, and the face balances as a result. Different operations, different reasons.

How long is the hospital stay?

One to two nights for single-jaw surgery. Two to three for double-jaw surgery. Day-care or one night for genioplasty on its own.

Will insurance cover jaw surgery?

Usually, when the reason is functional: a documented bite disorder, sleep apnoea, a developmental deformity or trauma. Correction for appearance only is not covered. We prepare the pre-authorisation documents for functional cases.

Can I avoid surgery with braces alone?

Sometimes. If the problem is where the teeth sit, braces are enough. If the problem is the size or position of the jawbone, braces cannot fix it and may make the result worse by tipping the teeth. A cephalometric X-ray at the first consultation settles the question.

What is mandibular advancement surgery?

It is the lower-jaw operation (BSSO) that brings a receded lower jaw forward. It corrects an overjet, improves the chin and neck line, and in selected patients with obstructive sleep apnoea it opens the airway.

Talk to a maxillofacial surgeon before you decide

Told you need jaw surgery? Or suspect your bite is more than crooked teeth? One consultation with a cephalometric X-ray tells you which option you need. Consultations are available at both V R Dental clinics, Kukatpally and Bowrampet.
